UPDATE:
15 October 2003
Auburn,
Alabama:
The Loveliest Village
Located
on the rolling plains of East Alabama, Auburn is a lovely little college
town that is home to about 44,000 residents and Alabama's largest
university. Auburn University is one of the
South's premier land grant institutions. Founded in 1856, the university first
opened its doors for 80 students and a faculty of six. Today, Auburn is one of the nation’s top producers
of Fortune 500 CEOs, and is one of the top five producers of NASA
engineers, scientists and astronauts.
WHAT'S
IN A NAME?
Auburn gets its name from a line in a poem written by
Oliver Goldsmith in 1770. It begins: "Auburn, sweet Auburn,
loveliest village on the plain..."

Homecoming:
Auburn is among America's
top 20 fastest growing communities according to a recent U.S. Census
Bureau report. AU alumni keep moving back there!

Toomer's Corner:
This
is the heart of downtown Auburn where campus and city meet. Toomer's
gets 'rolled' every time Auburn wins a game! Toomer's Drugstore also
has the best lemonade in the world!

Downtown Auburn:
This is
another view down College Street as seen from Toomer's Corner. Note
the big orange tiger paw in the middle of the
intersection.

Auburn University Hotel:
Yes, luxury accommodation is actually available in
little ol' Auburn!
e-Auburn:
By1997, more
than 75% of all households in Auburn had a home computer with

by Auburn University!

Auburn Schools:
Non-southerners often remark that I don't have much of
an accent for a Southerner, or that I don't seem
Southern. What they mean is that I don't seem like a redneck,
and the irony in that is, of course, that they are showing their own
ignorance. In any case, I feel like I got an outstanding education
in the Auburn City Schools.
Here are a few facts about my alma
mater, Auburn High
School:
Students: 1100+
Graduates who go on to
college: 90% +
Teachers with masters
or doctorates: 71%
Drop-out rate:
0.5%
Average SAT score:
1211
Average ACT score:
24.5
Foreign languages
spoken fluently by students: 23
Students who were born
outside the US: 12%
Diversity of the
student body: 54% Caucasian or Hispanic; 35% African American; 7%
Asian; 4% other.
Auburn High places many
of its graduates in Ivy League universities each year.
Auburn's
Architecture:
When I think of Auburn,
I think of Georgian Revival architecture. This is Samford Hall, the
main hall of the East Alabama Male College, which eventually became
the great Auburn University. During the Civil War, when the college
had to shut down, it was used as a hospital.
College Street:
This view
down College Street is one of the few things about Auburn that has
not changed since we moved there in 1972. Ware's Jewellers and
J&M Bookstore have been there forever! |
