UPDATE:   15 October 2003

Niagara Falls, Ontario

In August 2002, Bryan and I spent a weekend up in Ontario, Canada visiting Niagara Falls and Toronto. Niagara Falls was better than we expected! There are actually 2 waterfalls: American Falls (the smaller one) and Horseshoe Falls where the river crashes over a 52 meter/170 foot cliff causing lots of rainbows. There is a beautiful nature park on the New York side of the falls, and an elegantly manicured park teeming with flowers on the Canadian side. This is a picture of Horseshoe Falls as viewed from Canada.

The view of the waterfalls from the Canadian side.

The trolley through Niagara Falls State Park on the New York side.

Standing there imaging all the crazy people that have gone over the falls in a barrel.

Niagara-on-the-Lake's architecture, shops and cafes.

This is the Maid of the Mist boat trip. Everyone is dressed in blue raincoats because the boat goes very close to the foot of the falls.

This is a lovely old hotel in the nearby town of Niagara-on-the-Lake (as in Lake Ontario). I wanted to move to this town! It was absolutely perfect! Little shops and parks and tree-lined streets lined with clapboard houses. The town was originally founded in the 1700's as Newark, but was destoyed in the war of 1812. The British returned after the war and rebuilt the town using a Georgian architectural style which you can see in the hotel pictured above.

This is a view of the Niagara River passing over the American Falls.

Niagara-on-the-Lake holds the prestigious Shaw Festival each April-November, performing plays by George Bernard Shaw and other well known playwrights. This is one of the main theatres in town that hosts the Shaw Festival.

This was one of the many charming little restaurants in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
